Van Gaal: Welbeck is not Manchester United standard

Louis van Gaal has revealed Danny Welbeck was allowed to leave Manchester United because he has not reached the same standard as Wayne Rooney or Robin van Persie.

The 23-year-old joined Arsenal in a £16 million deal on deadline day, while United secured Radamel Falcao from Monaco as his replacement on a lucrative season-long loan
Welbeck, who was brought through United’s youth system, has never scored more than nine goals in a single league campaign during his career, and Van Gaal has revealed that the forward’s scoring record was the reason behind the sale.

"We have spoken with Danny Welbeck and also Chicharito before we had the chance to can get Falcao,” the Dutchman told reporters.

"I have given all the players a chance to convince me of their qualities. Danny Welbeck was here when he was nine.

"He played here for three seasons after Sunderland, but he doesn’t have the record of Van Persie or Rooney and that is the standard. That is why we let him go, because of Falcao, but also the youngsters who can fit in."
